Why I live here

Last evening reminded me of exactly why I choose to live in the Great Plains. I was watching a beaver who lives in the local pond at the end of my street glide effortlessly on his back in an entirely carefree state as ripples shimmered away on all azimuths ….all the while hoping for some of those storms on the western horizon to make it to me by dark. As the storms neared, I retrieved my camera from the house and set up as the fine light of the magic hour converged with the approaching weather in grand form.
The lightning was difficult to catch but I managed to get one:

The sight was one to behold …as golden shafts of light reflected in the still serenity…the shoreline accented by blooming aquatic flora …all briefly interupted by a staccato flash and a distant rumble as the storm drew closer.
I continued to take in this incredible scene as darkness encroached:

As the sky darkened further, the storm struck with vivid flashes and blinding rains. I retreated hastily to the house and watched in awe as the lightning etched it’s raw power across the purple tapestries above. The sweet smell of dampened vegetation from nearby pastures permeated the air with every fitful gust. After a while, the storm moved on…. the rain slackened and I quickly headed out to watch the awe-inspiring spectacle move to the east. I set the camera up looking east across the farm pasture across the street from my house and this is what it captured:

Then another lone grand discharge from high up in the storm slammed the ground leaving my retina with a ghost image for a while. A truly awe inspiring scene indeed!

I took in the experience as much as I could ….breathing deep, allowing the sweet smell of nature to permeate my soul as I thought to myself…but if it could only last for a bit longer. Then it dawned on me ….if these scenes were commonplace and one didn’t have to look for them, would they be taken for granted? I surely hope not. Some may not choose to lift a brow no matter what unfolds in front of them. For me, an experience such as last night’s will last for a lifetime.
