Ahhh yes…. I love a good storm… and lately we’ve been getting them at least a couple of times a week. I, of course, have been making a routine of it by walking down to the local pond and attempting to capture some of the grand skies we’ve been privy to with my camera.
So I thought I’d share a photographic summary of sorts for these first two weeks in August:
We had some nice storms with a torrential downpour on the 4th including a wet microburst that hit the house ….no damage however. On the 7th we had activity that was quite isolated but proved to be rather picturesque with this nice example of a congestus cloud:

This cloud soon started to glaciate and produce a rainshaft. I strolled over to the pond and shot this beautiful reflection in the pond’s mirror-like surface:

On August 8th we had more storms around with billowing cumulonimbus clouds that produced a nice set of crepuscular rays over the house:

One of these storms produced a strong wet microburst over southwest Norman. Jim Ladue caught this same feature just a mile east of me at 24th and Hwy 9 where he shot a series of images that he made into a really cool animation. Harold Brooks, who lives just a couple of blocks due west of Owens Stadium, experienced this microburst and reported greater than 8″ limbs down and flooding. My view was from just southeast of this feature:

Then yesterday night we had a rather nice light show after dark. I walked to the pond and shot lightning as a cell moved just east of me. The precipitation cascade was really neat to watch as the lightning would partially enter the rain and then exit it allowing for some interesting images. I also managed to capture some fairly nice long horizontal discharges:

As for today …..the sky is filled with ACCAS as I write with a nice anvil off to the northwest ….already a severe thunderstorm over Canadian county. Looks like more beautiful skies ahead ….oh how I love a good storm!
